Princeton council approves name changes to local landmarks

Amtrak Depot to be renamed in honor of Darius Miller

The Princeton City Council approved a resolution to rename the Amtrak Depot Campus in honor of Darius Miller, the man who brought the railway through the city.

“A lot of people disagreed with the decision when the former Darius Miller Park (adjacent to the depot) was renamed Rotary Park,” Princeton Mayor Joel Quiram said. “The fact is, Miller died before the park was a part of the city.”

Quiram said it makes sense to rename the Depot Campus after Miller who was instrumental in making Princeton a stop along the rail route.

A dedication ceremony will take place later in the year.

The council approved also the honorary renaming of South Fifth Street at Park Avenue East to Honorary Perry Memorial Way.

Quiram said the discussion about a formal name change came from a resident with a family history of physicians who practiced at OSF St. Clare, formerly Perry Memorial Hospital. After some discussion it was decided a name change to Perry Street would cause unnecessary disruption to residents of the street who would then need a formal change of address from the post office. Going forward, the street will have an honorary name change, marked by a new street sign.
