Bernice Laboda of LaMoille will celebrate her 108th birthday.
Bernice was born Feb. 9, 1913 in Chicago to Catherine and John Sliwa. She moved to Thorp, Wis., at the age of 3 or 4. When she was 16 she moved back to Chicago. She married John Laboda in 1938. They resided in Bensenville, Ill., for 41 years. John passed away in 1996, shortly before their move to LaMoille.
She has five children, Ron, Mel, Dennis, Diane and Ray Laboda; five grandchildren, David (Jackie) Laboda, Kristine (Joe) Crute, Jeffrey Laboda (deceased), Janet (Dave) Paranteau and Danny (Donna) Laboda; and seven great-grandchildren, Ryan and Rachel Laboda, Nathan and Gretchen Crute, Cole Paranteau, and Maddy and Ashley Laboda.
Bernice loves to garden. She has a green thumb for everything from flowers to vegetables. She was very skilled at sewing, quilting and crocheting.
Bernice got a special delivery for her birthday on Wednesday. Her granddaughter, Janet Paranteau, ordered Bernice’s favorite polish treat, paczki, from Cops & Doughnuts in Clare, Mich., and instead of letting snail mail handle this precious cargo, the guys at Cops & Doughnuts hit the road, driving 358 miles to LaMoille, to drop off the goods in person.
