PRINCETON - It was short and sweet for the Princeton wrestlers.
The Tigers squared off against Stillman Valley on the Prouty Gym mats Monday. Only five weights were contested with the Tigers winning three, en route to a 54-21 victory over the short-handed Cardinals, who gave away seven weight classes.
“We wrestled really well. Their (Stillman Valley) numbers are down a little bit just because the body-fat testing. They’re missing some guys, because they can’t go down yet,” Amy said.
“We’re wrestling really well. Tonight was about the same as it has been so far. The guys are going out aggressive and have done the things they need to do.”
Steven Benavidez was the first Tiger to wrestle, defeating Matt Jones 7-0 at 113.
Augie Christiansen scored the next contested decision for the Tigers, winning by fall at 152 at 2:48 to boost the Tigers’ lead to 33-9. Amy said Christiansen used a rare headlock to turn the tide.
“Augie hit a headlock, which he probably hasn’t hit since he was 5 years old. But it presented itself and was there and he took advantage of it,” Amy said.
The last contested match came at 195 where Drew Harp won 6-2 to make it 42-21.
In other matches wrestled, Preston Arkels lost 5-3 at 145 and Carson Etheridge lost by a 0:28 fall at 160.
Preston was in the match in the third period and got taken down. Only down two and almost got a near fall and takedown. Could have gone either way and the other guy ended up on top,” Amy said.
Princeton won three matches on the mats and won seven by forfeit while surrendering the 106 and 170 weight classes.
