Steelers make field goal, hold on for victory

Ben Roethlisberger led the Steelers into field goal range and kicker Chris Boswell made the go-ahead field goal in the final minute of the game.

Justin Fields did the best he could in a short amount of time, setting up kicker Cairo Santos for a 65-yard field goal attempt. Santos’ field goal fell well short of the goal post and the Steelers held on for a 29-27 victory.

Justin Fields finds Darnell Mooney for go-ahead touchdown

Justin Fields led the Bears 75 yards in 1:06 of game time, throwing a touchdown pass to Darnell Mooney with 1:46 remaining in the game. The extra point gave the Bears a one-point lead, 27-26.

Taunting penalty keeps defense on the field

The Bears defense was off the field. Cassius Marsh had a sack. The Steelers were going to have to punt. Then Marsh was penalized for taunting, giving Pittsburgh an automatic first down.

The Bears activated Marsh, an outside linebacker, off the practice squad earlier this week.

The Steelers capitalized with a 52-yard field goal, extending their lead to 26-20 with 2:52 remaining in the game.

DeAndre Houston-Carson recovers fumble, scores touchdown

Justin Fields was sacked by T.J. Watt for the third time Monday, and the Bears were forced to punt, despite trailing by 10 points in the fourth quarter. In a huge momentum shift, Bears linebacker Caleb Johnson forced a fumble on the punt return.

DeAndre Houston-Carson was there to scoop up the ball and take it back 25 yards for a Bears’ touchdown. The score cut the Steelers lead to 23-20 with 6:31 remaining in the game.

Jakeem Grant fumbles kickoff

Moments after a Steelers field goal made it a 10-point game, Bears kick returner Jakeem Grant fumbled the kickoff. The ball went flying right to Steelers kicker Chris Boswell.

Just when the Bears couldn’t afford another mistake, one struck on special teams.

Steelers field goal makes it two-possession game

The Bears defense came up with a stop on third-and-short, but Pittsburgh kicker Chris Boswell made a 54-yard field goal to extend the lead to 23-13 with 11:54 remaining in the game.

A questionable defensive pass interference call against Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson put the Steelers in field goal range on the drive.

Bears score touchdown from wildcat formation

Running back David Montgomery handed off to receiver Darnell Mooney from the wildcat formation, faking everybody out. Mooney scampered 15 yards for a Bears’ touchdown. The extra point made the Steelers advantage seven points, 20-13.

The Bears drove 82 yards on six plays on the possession.

Steelers tack on touchdown

Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth caught his second touchdown pass of the game late in the third quarter. Ben Roethlisberger threw a pass over the shoulder of Bears cornerback Kindle Vildor. The touchdown extended the Steelers’ lead to 20-6.

Bears add another field goal

The Bears were one yard shy of the end zone when Justin Fields threw a touchdown pass to Jimmy Graham. The touchdown was wiped off the board, however, because of a low block penalty against guard James Daniels. The worst part was, Daniels whiffed on the block.

The Bears went back 15 yards and couldn’t find the end zone. Kicker Cairo Santos added a 22-yard field goal. The Steelers lead, 14-6, with 7:43 remaining in the third quarter.

Santos field goal gets the Bears on the board

Bears quarterback Justin Fields couldn’t connect with tight end Jimmy Graham on two pass attempts toward the end zone. One was a very catchable ball on second-and-goal from the 7. Moments later, a penalty sent the Bears backwards five yards before Fields threw toward Graham again on third down, but the second attempt wasn’t really catchable.

Cairo Santos made a 30-yard field goal. The Steelers lead, 14-3, at halftime.

Watt sacks Fields, Bears fall out of field goal range

The Bears offense left Steelers’ All-Pro pass rusher T.J. Watt unblocked on a boot play, and Watt made them pay, sacking quarterback Justin Fields. It was Watt’s second sack of the game. The Bears had been at the Pittsburgh 25-yard line, well within field goal range.

After a penalty, they couldn’t convert on third-and-24 and were forced to punt.

Roethlisberger finds Freiermuth for Steelers touchdown

The Steelers extended their lead to 14-0 after Ben Roethlisberger found Pat Freiermuth for a 4-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. The Steelers took advantage of the short field after Justin Fields’ interception, driving 30 yards on five plays.

Roethlisberger had ample time to throw on the touchdown-scoring play. The Bears pass rush could do nothing to pressure the quarterback, who found his tight end in eventually.

Fields throws interception into Steelers defensive line

Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward timed his jump perfectly and deflected a Justin Fields pass into his own hands. It came on a second-and-11 play, moments after Heyward’s teammate T.J. Watt sacked Fields for a loss.

The turnover was the first of the game for either team.

Bears punt, Steelers drive for easy touchdown

The Steelers won the coin toss and elected to defer, giving the Bears offense first crack at it Monday. The Bears failed to pick up a first down on a quick three-and-out.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger led the Steelers 59 yards on six plays, highlighted by a nice third-down pass to receiver Chase Claypool, who beat Bears cornerback Kindle Vildor on the play.

Steelers running back Najee Harris capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown. The Steelers took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Jackson, Mack, Ogletree among inactives

The Bears will be without several defensive starters Monday. That includes safety Eddie Jackson (hamstring), outside linebacker Khalil Mack (foot) and inside linebacker Alec Ogletree (ankle), who are all listed as inactive.

Other inactives include running back Damien Williams, quarterback Nick Foles, defensive back Artie Burns and tight end J.P. Holtz.

Khalil Mack will miss 2nd straight game, David Montgomery returns

Mack will miss his second consecutive game due to a foot injury. Prior to last week, Mack hadn’t missed a game since 2018.

While Williams is out, running back David Montgomery returns to action. Montgomery has been out since injuring his knee in Week 4. The team activated Montgomery off injured reserve Monday afternoon.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is still doing his thing at age 39. The Steelers have been successful because Roethlisberger is releasing the ball fast. He releases the ball quicker than any quarterback in the NFL, according to advanced metrics.
