Morgan: 'I will not run again for school board'

Oswego School District 308 Board of Education member Toni Morgan has confirmed that she will not seek re-election on the April 6, 2021 ballot.

"I will not run again for school board," Morgan said in a statement to the Ledger. "I want to enjoy my last years of teaching before retirement. That is where my focus is for now in my life."

Morgan was first elected to the Board of Education in 2017. A former teacher in the district, Morgan currently teaches in Yorkville School District 115.

Including Morgan's, four seats on the OSD 308 Board of Education are up for election in April. Other seats up include current Vice President Matt Bauman, and board members Heather Moyer and Brent Lightfoot.

The Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) has laid out a timeline for the upcoming election. Candidates have been able to circulate petitions to have their names placed on the April ballot since Sept. 22. A one-week period for candidates to file their petitions will be held from Monday, Dec. 14 through Monday, Dec. 21. Statement of candidacy forms, as well as petition slips can be found on the IASB website.

The Board of Education consists of nine members and has a president, vice president and secretary - positions voted on internally by members of the new board. The board's role, as described on the district website, is to, "Develop and adopt goals and policies that meet state and local requirements, provide the resources necessary to pursue its goals according to its policies, and monitor district performance to see that results are consistent with goals and policies."

Duties of the board include: Approve curriculum and textbook selection, approve new personnel and salaries, provide and maintain school buildings, award contracts and approve bills, and arrange for the revenue necessary to operate the district.

The Board of Education also has four advisory committees considering a variety of matters to the board and district. Committees are Finance and Facilities, Policy Development and Legislative, Teaching and Learning, and Equity. Two board members serve as co-chairs for each committee.

Board members receive no compensation for their service.
