Man charged with making false armed robbery report in Elburn

Aurora resident told Kane County Sherif's Dept. he was the victim of the crime

BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – An Aurora man has been charged with making a false police report after he told the Kane County Sheriff's Office that he was the victim of an armed robbery in Elburn.

According to a news release from Sheriff Ron Hain, Cristobal Gomez, 20, of the 1100 block of Indian Ave, Aurora, told officers that he was the victim of the crime that happened on Nov. 20.

The release states that Gomez said he pulled his car into a church parking lot around 5 p.m. to stop and change the music on his phone. While doing so, Gomez said a white man with blonde hair tapped on the window and pointed a silver revolver at him.

The man, whom Gomez said appeared to be homeless, demanded Gomez get out of the car, then took his phone, smashed it and drove off in Gomez's car, the release stated.

Police later found Gomez's car in a ditch on the south side of Hughes Road at 4:19 p.m. Detectives investigating the case confronted Gomez about the inconsistencies in his timeline. Gomez then admitted that he was not robbed, but had lost control of his car, drove off the road and then walked home.

Gomez was then charged with one count of disorderly conduct and filing a false police report, a Class 4 felony.
