Substantial increase in COVID-19 cases in Kane County Wednesday

KANE COUNTY – Illinois public health officials on Wednesday reported 86 new cases of COVID-19 in Kane County and one new death, a woman in her 70s.

That is an increase from the 59 new cases reported on Tuesday. The total number of cases in the county is now 12,280. The number of COVID-19 deaths in Kane County is 324.

The West Suburban region (DuPage and Kane counties) has seen four days of positivity increases and three days of hospital admission increases. The region's positivity rate decreased slightly from 5.8% to 5.7%. Currently, 37% of medical/surgical beds are available and 47% of ICU beds.

The positivity rate is the percentage of people who test positive out of all the people tested in a given time period. The Illinois Department of Public Health will monitor if these indicators show an increase in COVID-19 disease burden with a simultaneous decrease in hospital capacity or if there are three consecutive days greater than or equal to 8% test positivity rate (7 day rolling).

These indicators can be used to determine whether additional community mitigation interventions are needed for a region to control the further spread of COVID-19.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 1,941 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 35 additional deaths Wednesday.

The seven-day rolling average of Illinois’ positivity rate rose slightly from 3.6% to 3.7%. The state received the results of 52,311 COVID-19 tests in the 24 hours leading up to Wednesday afternoon.

Illinois now has seen 266,151 total cases of the virus and 8,367 people have died.
