Woman shot outside Mokena bowling alley

A Chicago man was arrested after he got involved in an altercation at the parking lot of a Mokena bowling alley and shot a woman in the arm, police said.

About 10:50 p.m. Saturday, a group was leaving the Mokena Thunder Bowl, 18700 Old LaGrange Road, when a verbal and physical altercation broke out between a man and his girlfriend in the parking lot, Mokena police Cmdr. Randal Stumpf said.

The man’s girlfriend was in possession of a firearm and several people may have struggled to get their hands on the weapon, Stumpf said. One round from the gun went off and shattered a car window, he said.

During the incident, Malcolm L. Gray, 37, of the 100 block of South Central Avenue, managed to intervene, took possession of the firearm, and shot the man’s girlfriend in the arm, Stumpf said. She fled the scene and went to a wooded area nearby, he said.

Officers arrived on the scene and arrested Gray, he said. He was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery with a firearm and possession of a weapon by felon, according to court records.

The woman who was wounded by the gunshot was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox for treatment, Stumpf said. She was released from the hospital and she’s doing fine, he said.

Gray was taken to the Will County jail about 8:30 a.m. Sunday. He remained in the jail as of Monday afternoon.

A judge will set the amount for Gray’s bond during a hearing Monday at the Will County Courthouse in downtown Joliet.
