Hall High School golf coach Mason Kimberley is practicing what he preaches out on the golf course.
He fired a course record round of 66 (33-33) on the blue tees Thursday at Spring Creek Golf Course in Spring Valley, breaking the long-standing record of 67 held by Jim Moskalewicz.
What made the feat even more special, Kimberley said, was getting to play with a "couple of local legends" in Moskalewicz himself and Fred Steele, a four-time areawide champion. Fred Banks also played and provided "much-needed" moral support, Kimberley said.
"I know 66 seems a couple strokes high for a course record, but as someone who has been a member of almost every course in our area at one time or another, I can definitely say that Spring Creek is the toughest course in the Illinois Valley," Kimberley said.
Steele also holds the 18 hole White Tee record of 64 as well as the Blue Tees back 9 course record of 32.
John Potthoff set the Blue Tees front nine course record of 29 last year.
