An Ottawa man already charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer now is charged with selling cocaine and was ordered to be held on $1 million.
Aric D. Kain, 46, of Ottawa was picked up Wednesday at his residence on a La Salle County warrant charging him with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance (cocaine), the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Narcotics Team said in a news release issued Thursday.
The charge is a Class 1 felony carrying four to 15 years in prison, but Kain could face additional time if convicted, because he was out on bond awaiting trial for aggravated assault of an officer, a Class 4 felony carrying a one- to three-year sentence. By law, offenses committed while out on bond must be served with back-to-back prison sentences.
Tri-DENT said Kain was developed as a suspect after an investigation of cocaine sales in Ottawa. Court records show a grand jury approved the drug charge and the issuance of a warrant fixing bond at $1 million. Kain needs to post $100,000 in cash to be released from La Salle County Jail.
He will next appear Wednesday, July 29, before Chief Judge H. Chris Ryan Jr.
