Joliet man found with handgun behind Motel 6 dumpster: cops

A Joliet man was arrested after he was found hiding behind a dumpster at Motel 6 with a stolen loaded firearm nearby, police said.

About 5:20 p.m. Monday, officers responded to the Motel 6 at 1850 McDonough St. after receiving a report of a robbery, according to a Joliet police news release.

While conducting an investigation, officers saw Terrence Williams, 25, hiding behind a dumpster and noticed he had a “small bloody laceration on his hand,” police said. Officers also found a stolen loaded firearm covered in blood near the dumpster where Williams was hiding, police said.

During Williams’ bond hearing Tuesday, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Katie Rabenda said Williams told the officers he jumped a fence at the motel, found a Glock and dropped it when the officers arrived.

Rabenda recommended a $100,000 bond given Williams’ past criminal history. In 2018, Williams pleaded guilty to aggravated battery and aggravated cruel treatment of animals, court records show.

Williams told Judge Brian Barrett he plans to represent himself and he asked for a lower bond. He said he had about $400 in his wallet and could possibly post up to $1,500 for his bond.

He said the “circumstances” that are being held against him “are extreme.” Will County Assistant Public Defender Renata Bajic told Williams not to talk about the facts of the case.

Williams said he wasn’t a flight risk and he should wear an electronic monitoring device instead of being in jail.

When Barrett set Williams’ bond at $90,000, Williams said “That’s beyond my means.”
