Cops: Joliet attorney arrested on DUI charge

A Joliet attorney was arrested in Lockport on a charge of driving under the influence, police said.

About 11:15 p.m. Friday, an officer conducting radar patrol saw a car traveling 55 mph in a 35 mph zone in the 700 block of North State Street, said Lockport Deputy Police Chief Ron Huff.

The officer initiated a traffic stop on the driver who was identified as 62-year-old Charles L. Bretz, he said.

Bretz is an attorney who has represented clients in high-profile criminal cases in Will County.

Huff said the officer suspected Bretz was under the influence of alcohol after he allegedly smelled alcohol on Bretz’s breath and saw he had bloodshot, glassy eyes. Huff also said Bretz admitted to drinking.

The officer asked Bretz to exit his vehicle and take a field sobriety test but he refused to do so, Huff said.

The officer asked Bretz eight times to exit his car, Huff said, with Bretz repeatedly refusing.

Bretz did exit his car when the officer told him he was under arrest, Huff said. Bretz was arrested on probable cause of DUI and obstructing an officer, Huff said.

Court records show Bretz was formally charged Tuesday with misdemeanor DUI and speeding.

Bretz did not respond to a call on the arrest Tuesday. Instead, his associate Neil Patel answered and said he will represent Bretz in the short term.

Patel said he will need to obtain copies of all police reports and interview witnesses in the case.

“At this point, based on the information we have, we feel we have a strong defense to mount,” Patel said.
