Arby's closes in Joliet, Buona Beef in the works

The Arby's on Jefferson Street has closed, although a sign at the restaurant promises "New Restaurant Coming Soon."

Derek Conley, economic development specialist for the city, said he does not know of any plans submitted for redevelopment of the location for a new restaurant.

"Many times these places re-brand and go with another restaurant," Conley said. "We're hoping that's the case."

The closed Arby's is at the corner of Republic Avenue.

Another beef sandwich place is planned about a block away at the corner of Jefferson and Springfield Avenue.

Plans for building a Buona Beef on the south side of the street have been in the works since 2018.

Conley said the city and a developer have been working through issues with the Illinois Department of Transportation on the site, but he expects construction to start this year.
