A man previously charged with severely injuring a man while driving under the influence was arrested for allegedly causing a disturbance at the Gas N Wash at the corner of River Road and Route 52 in Shorewood.
Officers were called to the gas station about 8:40 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a “disturbing individual” behaving erratically, said Shorewood Deputy Police Chief Eric Allen.
A clerk at the Gas N Wash told officers she was scared due to the erratic behavior of a man later identified as Nicolae Rebeja, 30, Allen said. Rebeja paced around the store and talked to himself.
Rebeja was charged on Nov. 27, 2018, with aggravated DUI. He allegedly injured a man in a crash in Plainfield Township, causing him to suffer a brain bleed, fractured sternum and fractured skull, court records show.
The officers at the Gas N Wash asked Rebeja if he needed help but he responded by profanely accusing them of killing his dog, Allen said.
The officers determined Rebeja was under “some type of drug or narcotic,” Allen said. The clerk wanted him off the property and the officers escorted him out to the parking lot, he said.
When a Dodge pickup pulled into the lot, Rebeja sprinted toward the vehicle and slammed his hands on the hood, denting it, Allen said.
The officers chased and tackled Rebeja, Allen said. He resisted arrest and continued to behave erratically at the Shorewood Police Department for booking, he said.
Rebeja was booked into the Will County jail and his bond was set at $50,000.
