Top 20 of 2019: Route 47 & I-88 Interchange opens in Sugar Grove

The Kane County Chronicle staff compiled a list of the Top 20 most engaging, compelling and important stories of 2019 from the TriCities and Western Kane County area. They are not ranked in order of importance.

The long-awaited full access interchange at Route 47 and I-88 officially opened on Dec. 10 at a ribbon-cutting with state and local officials.

Construction began on the project in April, which allows full eastbound and westbound access to and from the two roadways. The project cost was around $20 million dollars. The project was years in the making, as state and local officials wrangled over funding of the project. It was funded in part by Illinois Tollway's 15-year, $14 billion capital program, “Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future.”

The new interchange is an all-electronic interchange, with cashless toll plazas for vehicles with I-PASS located on the ramps carrying traffic to and from the east.
