Romeoville marijuana dispensary granted license for recreational sales

Last week, a medical marijuana dispensary in Romeoville was granted a license from the state to participate in recreational sales.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation announced a fourth round of “same site” cannabis licenses, which allow existing medical dispensaries to obtain a recreational sale license.

The marijuana company Verilife, one of the country’s largest, was granted licenses for multiple facilities, including its Romeoville office at 1335 Lakeside Drive.

The license will permit the dispensary to begin selling recreational marijuana at its location starting on Jan. 1, provided it complies with local zoning rules and other local laws.

The Romeoville Village Board approved a 3% tax on recreational marijuana sales at its Sept. 19 meeting.

Even before Verilife was granted its license from the state to sell in Romeoville, company spokesman Jeremy Unruh said it had been working closely with village officials in hopes they’d be favorable to allowing sales.

State law will permit Illinois
residents who are at least 21 years old to possess up to 30 grams of cannabis flower, up to 5 grams of cannabis concentrate and up to 500 milligrams of THC in a cannabis-infused product.

As of this week, Illinois has granted close to 30 licenses to dispensaries around the state, including one for the 3C Compassionate Care Center in Joliet in August.
