Renovation project planned at P.H. Miller School in Plano

Plano School District 88 Board of Education members voted last week to proceed with design work and the preparation of construction bid documents for renovation work at P.H. Miller Elementary School at 924 N. Lew St.

Construction would be completed next summer, according to Bryan Appel, district operations director.

Appel outlined a comprehensive renovation of several areas of the building that, he said, is needed.

Appel said each portion of the project would be bid on separately. Once all are opened and the low bids determined, his staff will recommend the low bid for each item for board members to make a final determination at a future board meeting.

A large number of the windows in the building are original and should be replaced, Appel told board members. He said the work would include removing and replacing the window systems which contain asbestos.

Two areas of the roof including one section of the roof deck need to be replaced, he noted.

The entire office area should be redesigned and renovated and the security features enhanced, he noted.

He added that the original galvanized water pipes are failing "at an alarming rate" and need to be replaced.

"During this work the hallway ceilings and lighting will be replaced. The new lighting will be motion-controlled LED like Plano Middle School. The infrastructure will be installed to convert the entire building to LED in the near future," he added.

He suggested alternate bids for several items, one of which is for the redesign and renovation of the Learning Resource Center. All current books in the LRC would be relocated to a book room and the current LRC would be converted into three specialized service offices and a large gross motor skills room to be used by the pre-kindergarten program, according to Appel's plans.

Board members directed the staff to complete the design work, construction and bid documents, let public bids for the projects and report the results to the board for possible bid awards.
