Algonquin will undertake various construction projects around the Terrace Hill subdivision starting next year.
The village said this will improve underground infrastructure and the roadway, while also improving multiple streets and pedestrian facilities.
Bob Mitchard, public works director for the village of Algonquin, said the pavement in that area is 30 years old.
“It’s about that time to address the issues that have occurred over that period of time,” he said.
Though the village has done some patching in that area over the years, Mitchard said, this is no longer sufficing.
As part of the Terrace Hill Subdivision Improvement project, the bridge structure over Woods Creek will be replaced and include a new multi-use path, pedestrian railings and other decorative elements. The existing bicycle paths will be rebuilt, and a new multi-use path on Harnish Drive will be constructed, as well as a new paved parking lot for Ted Spella park on Harnish Drive.
Construction also will include rebuilding worn out asphalt on Fairway View Drive, Greens View Drive, Lakeview Avenue, Persimmon Drive and Woods Creek Drive; roadway reconstruction of Woods Creek Drive over Woods Creek; improvements on Woods Creek Channel, storm sewer, sanitary sewer and water main utility improvements and improved pedestrian crossings and facilities.
Earlier this month, there was a public meeting about the project held at the Public Works Facility in Algonquin. Mitchard said about 30 residents showed up to the public meeting, where they were able to look at some presentation boards and given some renderings of what the roads and new bridge is going to look like.
Mitchard said the project was “generally well-received,” at the meeting, with a couple of questions and individual issues people had about their specific property that the village was able to check out.
The Terrace Hill subdivision project will cost the village just more than $5 and a half million, Mitchard said.
He added that some of this money, about $2.5 million, is budgeted in the current fiscal year, and the remainder of the work will be budgeted for the next fiscal year.
The village opened bids for the project on Tuesday, Mitchard said, and will be making a recommendation for a contract with the low bidder.
The Village Board will be considering the contract at the first committee of the whole meeting in November, he said.
Christopher B Burke Engineering will be the resident engineer on the project. They are being paid $350,000 for the project. That is in addition to the $5.5 million the project will cost, Mitchard said.
The village anticipates work on the Terrace Hill subdivision project to begin on the first of the year and end in August.
Mitchard said village staff will do the winter work first, such as the utilities, bridge work and creek work, and start on the road work in the spring.
