Crystal Lake woman stabbed boyfriend with scissors, police say

A Crystal Lake woman is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after police said she stabbed her boyfriend twice in the back with a pair of scissors.

Crystal Lake police arrested 32-year-old Helia S. Dos Santos on Saturday after an alleged altercation between the woman and her boyfriend. During the dispute, Dos Santos is accused of using a pair of scissors to stab the man once in the left shoulder blade and again in his right lower back area, according to a criminal complaint filed in McHenry County court.

Dos Santos, of the 100 block of Greenfield Road, is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and domestic battery.

The most serious charge, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, is a felony typically punishable by two to five years in prison. Domestic battery is a misdemeanor that usually results in less than one year in jail.

The stabbing occurred during an “argument the suspect and victim were having related to domestic issues,” Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Thomas Kotlowski said in an email.

“The man was seen by paramedics; however, he refused to be transported to the hospital,” Kotlowski said.

Dos Santos, who was released on bond Monday afternoon, is due back in court Nov. 20. The McHenry County Public Defender’s Office has been appointed to represent Dos Santos on the charges.
