Streator Lawn and Garden closes after 41 years

A 41-year-old business in Streator is closing at the end of the month.

Streator Lawn and Garden Owner Don Goerne confirmed to The Times the repair shop at 212 W. Main St. will close on Thursday and the showroom will close on Thursday, Oct. 31.

"I just want to give a heartfelt thanks to all our dedicated and knowledgeable employees and a thank you to our loyal customers," Goerne said. "We've had a lot of good relationships."

Goerne said a variety of factors played into the closure that are affecting many small businesses, such as increasing overhead costs and intense competition from both local storefronts and online businesses.

"And just the stress of running a seasonal business," Goerne said. "We're so seasonal that it's stressful during the busy times when we're overwhelmed and stressful when it's slow and we're not overwhelmed."

Goerne said he's heard from many customers over the years they've been glad to have the parts shop close by and were often praised for either having the necessary tools in stock or being able to acquire them quickly.

The business will have special discounts on all remaining in-stock Christmas supplies and merchandise.
