WOODSTOCK – Huntley's girls swimming team was both anxious and excited to see how all of its hard work would translate to a big meet like Saturday's Woodstock Invitational at Woodstock North.
The Red Raiders have their answer.
Huntley finished first in eight of 20 events and won the team title with 598 points. Conant (508) was second, Crystal Lake co-op (485) was third, Cary-Grove (462) was fourth, and Jacobs co-op (426) was fifth. North co-op (334) was seventh, and Dundee-Crown (254) was eighth.
"They're pretty hyped," Huntley coach Jenna Gaudio said. "We've been building them up for this, and I think this is going to be really good momentum to push them through the season. I'm excited to hopefully do it again [at the Fox Valley Conference Invitational]."
Huntley sophomore Ella Young, who was named co-FVC Newcomer of the Year at last year's FVC Invitational, finished first in the 50-yard freestyle sophomore race and second in the 100 butterfly. She also was on two winning relays.
"Last year, we were a little behind the other teams," Young said. "This year, we pulled it off. I'm really proud of how hard everyone is working."
Huntley senior Sydney McGuine won the 50 free senior and 100 backstroke, and was on two winning relays.
McGuine competed with the Raiders as a freshman and sophomore but only swam club last year.
"It's fun. I really missed it," McGuine said. "It's more about the team. I feel like you get more adrenaline, and you go faster."
McGuine, who hopes to make state, had extra incentive to swim fast Saturday.
"I wasn't expecting a 59, but my dad said, since I didn't clean my room, I'd be grounded if I didn't go under a minute," McGuine said. "So that really helped."
Also for the Raiders, Alyssa Tramuta won the 100 free sophomore. Raquel Salinas, Skyler Arredia, Emma Bolas, Abigail DeVries, Caitlyn Gooden and Jillian Cherwin all were on winning relays.
The Raiders have 28 swimmers this season, making it the largest girls swimming team in Huntley history, Gaudio said. Many are new to the program.
"This is Skyler's first year with us, and she has a lot of energy and power in the pool," Gaudio said. "Raquel has brought a lot of force, especially in the breaststroke. Her and Caitlyn have had a lot of back-to-back battles at that spot."
Crystal Lake co-op's Makayla Nietzel finished first in the 50 free junior and 100 free junior, Jamie Gindorf won the 200 IM and Abi Zelikman was first in the 100 free freshman. Gretchen Fuerholzer, Maggie Noftz, Madisen Pavoris and Maddy Uhl were on winning relays.
Jacobs co-op junior Jenny Tokarz, a two-time state qualifier, was first in the 200 free and 500 free, while D-C freshman Ali Fitzgerald placed first in the 50 free freshman and 100 breaststroke.
Jacobs is the two-time defending FVC champion. Saturday was the team's first meet of the season.
"It's not an ideal finish, but I feel like you have to go through ups and downs to grow," Tokarz said.
