AREA ROUNDUP: Ottawa soccer, Marquette volleyball win tourneys

Seneca spikers also claim championship in Somonauk

SERENA — The Ottawa Pirates won all three of their matches — blanking each opponent — Saturday to claim the title of the Serena boys soccer tournament.

Ottawa (3-1) opened play by defeating Indian Creek 2-0. Julio Mendez and Jacob Krueger scored the Pirates' goals. Krueger and Brayden Pazur notched assists.

Ottawa then edged Newark-Seneca 1-0, with Mateo Mendez tallying the goal and Gio Resendez the assist.

The Pirates beat Serena 3-0 in their finale. Lance Malmassari, Tyler Robertson and Ethan Fowler all netted goals for Ottawa, while Julio Mendez, Zach Nelson and Ethan Cela all notched assists.

"It was nice to get in the win column," said Pirates coach Jeff Davis, who recorded his 100th career victory during the opener. "The guys played really well today on both sides of the ball. We had several quality shots on the net and limited our opponent's opportunities. It is nice to go through a tournament with three shutouts."

Fowler and Nelson split halves each game in goal for Ottawa.

Geneseo 2, Earlville 1

In the Earlville War on 34 Tournament, the Raiders were edged by the Maple Leafs in the title contest. Landon Larkin tallied the goal for Earlville.

In the semifinals, the Raiders defeated Morris 2-0, as Devyn Kennedy and Jarred Fries netted a goal apiece, while Manny Gomez and Larkin notched assists.

Plano 2, Somonauk 0

Somonauk 3, Reed-Custer 0

In the Somonauk Breakout Tournament, the Bobcats (1-3) were defeated by the Reapers and blanked the Comets.

Parker Wasson, Andrew Wernsman and Carter Andrews all netted goals for Somonauk against Reed-Custer. Aaron Banister notched an assist.

Volleyball

Lady Cru wins Ridgeview Invitational

At Colfax, the Marquette Academy Lady Crusaders won the championship of the Ridgeview Invitational on Saturday, going unbeaten with victories including ones over Decatur Eisenhower (25-9, 25-17), Argenta-Oreana (25-18, 25-15) and the host Lady Mustangs (25-23, 25-15).

Leaders for the Lady Cru included Ellie Eager (35 kills, 12 blocks, 27 service points), Aubrey McCallum (32 kills), Grace Jeanblanc (19 kills, 20 service points), Addie McConnaughhay (41 digs, 24 service points) and Emma Thomas (91 assists).

Lady Bobcats 1-1-2, Seneca wins Breakout

The Somonauk Lady Bobcats were 1-1-2 in their own Breakout Tournament: splitting with Leland (25-11, 16-25) and Putnam County (23-25, 25-22), beating Hinckley-Big Rock (25-13, 25-16), while losing to Seneca (25-10, 25-15).

For Somonauk (1-2-2) on the day, Katy Tripp had 22 kills and five aces, McKenna Dayhuff 18 kills and Abigail Neidigh a dozen kills.

The Seneca Lady Irish recorded a perfect 4-0 record Saturday to win the event, not losing a single set.

Ottawa 4th, Streator 7th in Lady Pirate Invite

At Ottawa High School, the host Lady Pirates posted a 2-2 record Saturday to place fourth in their own tournament.

Ottawa opened the day strong, scoring victories over Indian Creek and Coal City. The Lady Pirates then fell to Tri-Valley to complete pool play and Limestone in the event's third-place match.

Streator (3-4) placed seventh in the tournament, going 1-3 with pool-play losses to IVC (25-19, 25-15), Limestone (25-12, 25-23) and Flanagan-Cornell (25-22, 25-18). The Bulldog Spikers then defeated Indian Creek (22-25, 25-15, 15-12) in a thriller to claim seventh place.

Skyler Bedeker (20 kills, five blocks), Natali Haynes (15 kills, 13 blocks), Taytum Williams (nine kills, nine digs), Sydney Donahue (nine digs), Leticia Cruz (31 digs), Ellie Magana (15 assists), Kristin Lane (11 assists) and Jozie Cole (12 assists) were among Streator's leaders on the day.

Flanagan-Cornell (4-1-1) went 2-1-1 on the day, splitting with Limestone (25-22, 24-26), falling to IVC (25-9, 25-6), then defeating both Streator and Coal City.

Girls tennis

Ottawa 5, Princeton 0

At Princeton last Thursday, the Lady Pirates began their campaign by blanking the Tigresses in a nonconference dual meet.

Posting singles wins for Ottawa were Sara Meyer at No. 1 (6-1, 6-1 over Sophia Rucinsky) and Mary Riva at No. 2 (6-3, 6-3 over Olivia Alter). Notching doubles victories were Regan O'Fallon and Ella Marvel at No. 1 (6-0, 6-0 over Maddie Devart and Emma Zelinik), Marta Johnson and Rebekah Felty at No. 2 (6-3, 6-1 over Anya Kauffner and Abby Jensen), and Mally Charbonneau and Emily Walker at No. 3 (6-0, 6-0 over Nyla Thompson and Mayah Carlson).

Recording exhibition doubles wins for Ottawa were Bridget Stevenson and Avery Landers, Tessa Thiry and Boom Patel, and Lex Taylor and Savanna Nelson.

Sophomore/Freshman volleyball

Marquette wins 2 more tourneys

The Marquette volleyball program made it a clean sweep on the weekend, with the sophomores following the varsity's lead and winning its own bracket of the Ridgeview Invitational led by the likes of Eva McCallum (23 kills), Lindsey Kaufmann (15 kills, 19 digs), Josie Eager (12 kills, 13 digs), Izzy Garkey (13 digs) and Kaylee Killelea (57 assists).

The Marquette freshmen, meanwhile, posted a 5-1 record to claim the championship of the Putnam County Freshman Tournament.
