Fawcett's Pharmacy reopens for business

After tax error corrected, doors open again on Tuesday

PRINCETON — After being closed down by the Illinois Department of Revenue on Friday, Fawcett's Pharmacy in Princeton reopened for business Tuesday following a tax payment mix-up.

Store manager Jamie Huskey confirmed Tuesday the business was reopened at noon after a tax payment had been cleared with the bank and the state of Illinois.

On Monday, Huskey explained the issue stemmed from a mix-up in taxes.

She said store owner Nelson Bobrowski discontinued doing business with the pharmacy’s former accountant last year. The accountant had documented that she paid the taxes for the pharmacy this year.

Huskey said when Fawcett’s received notices from the state in the mail, she forwarded them to Bobrowski, who looked back at records and saw that the taxes had been documented for this year, so they ignored the letters in the mail.

“The state is saying they are not paid, so we are checking into it and working with the state to get everything cleared up,” Huskey said Monday.

Customers of Fawcett’s Pharmacy were surprised Friday when they found a green note stuck to the store’s door warning them that the business’s certification of registration was revoked.

The sticker stated it was issued under the authority of the State of Illinois and the Illinois Department of Revenue.

“Persons who engage in the business of selling tangible personal property at retail after their Certificate of Registration has been revoked are guilty of a Class A misdemeanor and will be subject to criminal prosecution and penalty,” the notice stated.

Later Friday evening, Fawcett’s Pharmacy posted on its business Facebook page apologizing for the “inconvenience.” The post stated the pharmacy was closed, but was doing its best to open again Tuesday.

In the meantime, the pharmacy was still answering its telephone for customers who needed medications before Tuesday and transferring those prescriptions to another pharmacy until the issue was resolved.

“We are doing all we can to help in this unfortunate situation,” Huskey had said.

A note on the pharmacy’s front door next to the revoked sticker on Monday stated, “We are sorry for this inconvenience. We are doing our best to be open Tuesday. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we go through this difficult time. We will do our best to accommodate you with your medicine. Please give us a call if you need us to transfer your prescription. Thank you for your business and understanding.”

The note was signed, “Fawcett’s Pharmacy Crew.”
