Raymond Andrew Cuevas

TUCSON, Ariz. – Raymond A. Cuevas was born on June 14, 1955 in Sterling, Illinois to Dolores F. (Ybarra) and Eliseo S. Cuevas. He attended and graduated from Sterling Township High School in 1973.

After graduation he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. Ray served from 1973 to 1978. Ray was attached to HQSVCCO, 3rd Battalion 3rd Marine Division as a Radio Repair Mechanic. Ray then studied and became a Master Electrician. He worked as Government Contractor on high power lines from 1978 to 2000.

Ray married Theresa L. Graham on March 18, 1977, in 29 Palms, California where they met. They were married for 40 years. They relocated to Tucson, Arizona in 2003 to be close to his older brother, Eliseo. Ray married Wendy Carlson on November 13, 2018 in Tucson, Arizona.

Ray was a member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. He began competing in their games in 2010. His events were javelin, shot put, discus and bowling where he earned gold medals in all events. He loved being able to work with his hands and did some woodwork and as a joke, took up the crochet hook. He enjoyed crocheting different things especially stuffed animals for family members.

Ray was preceded in death by his sister Rosemary, in infancy; his father, Eliseo in 1975; his mother, Dolores in 2018. He was also preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, Aunts Mary Rodriguez and Celia Ybarra and Uncles Frank Ybarra and Ray Ybarra.

He leaves behind his 2 sons, Douglas and George, 6 grandchildren, Brandon, Brenda, Alexander, Nicolas, Ana Grace Orr and Andrew. 3 brothers, Eliseo (Angie), Richard (Pam) and Ranulfo (Susanne), 2 sisters, Rose Marie and Rebecca (Pascual) Herrera, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ray was cremated on May 30, 2019. A service for family and friends will be July 8, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Pius Catholic Church, 1800 North Camino Pio Decimos in Tucson, Arizona.
