Northland Plaza Planet Fitness to open June 17

DeKALB – Planet Fitness plans to join the DeKalb-area market when it opens its doors June 17, according to a news release from parent company Planet Fitness Holdings.

The popular workout spot also will be hosting a Teen Summer Challenge, according to the release, which will encourage teenagers to stay active over the summer. Teens ages 15 to 18 will get the chance to work out free from June 17 through Sept. 1 as part of the nationwide initiative, the release shows.

Teens interested in the promotional campaign can sign up beginning Wednesday at a temporary location that’s now open in Northland Plaza, at 2442 Sycamore Road next to Panda Express. Those who sign up will also be entered to receive a $500 scholarship and other prizes throughout the summer.

Mike Campagnolo, the owner of 64 Chicago-area and Indianapolis-based Planet Fitness franchises, has said that opening a business in DeKalb is allowing the fitness giant to fill a niche.

The facility will be 20,000 square feet, offer memberships for $10 a month and include tanning and massage chairs, in addition to traditional gym equipment.

Campagnolo has also said that total project costs are a little more than $2.5 million and will include renovations to the interior space, refacing of the front of the building and construction of a new entrance.

Grocer Aldi is also moving from its current location at 2569 Sycamore Road to a bigger space across the street in the plaza at 2500 Sycamore Road. Construction for Aldi began in February and is expected to be completed by mid-2019.
