Genoa's Corner Grill restaurant has closed for good

GENOA – A restaurant Genoa Mayor Mark Vicary dubbed a "mainstay" of the city has closed its doors.

Greg Maurice, DeKalb County Health Department director, confirmed Thursday that Corner Grill on Main, 137 W. Main St., closed April 14, just weeks after renovations to bring the restaurant up to code. Maurice said the health department was not involved in the owner's decision to close and only found out after contacting the owner, Ali Ahmed.

"When we contacted the owner, they said they were closed," Maurice said.

Ahmed closed the business to focus on his other restaurant, Nat's on Maple, 112 S. Maple St., in Sycamore, Maurice said. Ahmed did not respond to a request for comment.

The restaurant closed temporarily from Feb. 18 to Feb. 28. to install new flooring in the kitchen and fix the plumbing, Maurice said.

"The one main thing why they had to close was the floor, which was in such poor disrepair that they had to move the equipment out in stages," Maurice said.

Other violations occurred dating back to Nov. 18 and ranged from the deteriorating floor to high food storage temperatures. However, the restaurant completely fixed all problems before reopening Feb. 28, Maurice said.
