A Woodstock man was charged with burglary after allegedly entering into an apartment on April 16 in the Silver Creek complex with intent to steal a TV, according to a complaint filed by Woodstock police.

The resident of the apartment, Valerie Underwood, was found dead in the apartment the same day.

Alexander T. Rulford, 41, of the 1200 block of Walden Oaks Drive, Woodstock, is charged with residential burglary. On April 16, Rulford went into Underwood’s apartment intending to steal a 43-inch Toshiba TV, according to the complaint filed April 17.

Woodstock Police Chief John Lieb wouldn’t confirm whether the death and the burglary charge were related.

“All matters going on at that time in that location are under consideration,” Lieb said. “In addition to that we are waiting for results from [Underwood’s] autopsy, which takes two to three weeks, and that is an estimated time.”

Interim McHenry County Coroner David Devane has said he won’t determine a cause of death until Underwood’s toxicology report comes back.

Police and paramedics were called about 1:30 p.m. April 16 to the 1500 block of North Seminary Avenue for a report of a person found dead. During the initial response to the call for the reported death, police said a separate call was made to the dispatch center describing suspicious activity in the same area.

The time Rulford was arrested or allegedly burglarized the apartment isn’t noted on the complaint.

He was processed into the jail at 1:05 a.m. April 17, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office booking log.

Rulford remained in the McHenry County Jail Monday afternoon, and must pay $9,500 to be released. His next court date is set for Wednesday.
