Tigers happy, but not satisfied

Princeton Ferris Invite

PRINCETON — The Princeton Tigers left Tuesday’s Ferris Family Invite at Princeton, happy not satisfied.

The Boys in Blue kept their share of blue ribbons at home with Eli Grundman winning the pole vault (12-6), Kyle Degutis the shot put (45-11 1/2) and Grant Foes the discus (126-5).

They were all happy taking first, but not exactly with how they got there.

Grundman said his effort was “OK” as he has cleared 14-0 this season. He is trying out new things he learned at a camp last week in Bloomington.

“My best is 14, so it’s kind of a disappointment. But I’m starting to learn a different way of doing it,” he said. “I’m taking more steps and taking off from farther out. I was taking off too soon in the beginning.”

Degutis said he needs to work out some kinks, because he has thrown better than he did, even before the meet.

“I was glad I took first, but it was not my best throw. I was throwing better in warmups,” Degutis said. “I felt as I was going into the ring as I was throwing that something was off, but I just couldn’t fix it. Glad I took first, but wish to improve.”

Foes called it a good night for PHS throws; he would have just liked to have thrown better.

“It was all right. But I’ve got a lot in the tank still,” Foes said. “Striving for bigger, but yet I’m happy with placing.”

Degutis, a senior, said the future is bright for the sophomore Foes.

“Grant’s an amazing thrower. He’s got so much potential. He just has to fix a couple things, but he’s got the potential going to state this year and going to state next year. Absolutely.”

PHS freshman Drew Harp also won the popular throwers’ 100 dash (12.01), which is a nonscored event.

Good things also came in twos for the Tigers. They took seconds in the 4x200 (1:37.68) and 4x800 (9:22.52) relays, while Conner Workman took a pair of seconds in the long jump (20-7 1/2) and triple jump (39-5 1/2).

Hall’s Marshall Walk (11.17) and Steven Brust (11.19) ran 1-2 in the 100-meter dash. They also ran on the Red Devils’ winning efforts in the 4x100 (44.22) and 4x200 (1:33.14) relays with Anthony Buchanan and Christian Stefaniak.

Girls

Two PHS girls made quick tracks between the track and softball field for a pair of wins.

Senior Kendra Cain won the long jump (15-9 1/2) before the first pitch, even though they didn’t know she won until much later.

Freshmen Hannah Muehlschlegel (28.02) and McKenzie Hecht (28.16) made fast tracks to the track meet after the softball game was over and ran 1-2 in the 200-meter dash.

PHS coach Pat Hodge was glad it all worked out to let the girls double dip.

“Since we were both at home, it looked like we could get a little something in,” he said. “It was mainly all three girls that suggested to me that they could sneak in an event, and I was just along for a nice, pleasant ride.”

Hodge said he didn’t even know Cain had won long jump until he started to read the results over the P.A.

St. Bede’s Jane Barnes swept the weights with throws of 31-6 in the shot put and 99-6 in the discus.

The Lady Bruins also claimed second in the 4x800 relay (12:17.43).

Three was the magic number for Hall senior Jenna Parente, who claimed thirds in the 800 (2:37.37), 1600 (6:09.2) and 3200 (13:54.17).

Rockets blast off

Rock Falls swept both the boys and girls titles. It won the combined team championship as well.

The Rockets outdistanced Hall, coming off its own Morris Invitational title, 481-362. Kewanee (343) was third, followed by PHS (305), Mendota (191) and St. Bede (159).

Rock Falls (252) and Hall (184) also finished 1-2 in the girls meet. They were followed by Kewanee (153), followed by PHS (105), Mendota (101) and St. Bede (97).

Notes: Most outstanding athletes went to Kewanee sophomore Tristan Nolan, who won two girls events (300 IH, TJ) and claimed two seconds, and Rock Falls senior Keyon Wolber, who won both hurdles and the high jump.
