SYCAMORE – A Chicago man ordered to be released from the DeKalb County Jail in December sat behind bars. He had nowhere to go, so he couldn’t be placed on house arrest, as the judge had ordered.

While there, Remal L. Walker, 28, of Chicago, called a person Jan. 9 who was in the car with him the night he was arrested, and threatened them.

“Y’all better know what’s coming for y’all,” he said in a voicemail, during one of 16 calls he made to a woman who police said was in the car.

Police said in court records a loaded 9 mm handgun was found in the trunk of the car that was pulled over about midnight Dec. 10 in the 900 block of Ridge Drive, and that Walker was in the back seat. The records show the driver claimed Walker told him, “I’m going to jail. I’ve got a warrant, pills and a gun.”

Walker had two Ecstasy pills on him, and he admitted what they were, the records show.

He’s been charged with unlawful possession and use of a firearm by a felon, typically punishable by two to five years in prison upon conviction, as well as the latest charge of harassing a witness, which carries three to seven years with a conviction.

On Jan. 11, Judge Philip Montgomery – who’d ordered Walker be released on his signature in December – granted Public Defender Reid Nixon’s motion that Walker be taken off electronic home monitoring, against the state’s objection.

On Monday afternoon, Montgomery set bond at $10,000. Motions to increase bond on the initial charge, and to reduce it on the latest, will go before Judge Robbin Stuckert at 9 a.m. Feb. 19.
