Bond was set at $500,000 Dec. 31 for a Florida man accused of robbing a woman of her car from the Oak Brook Mall, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office.
Anthony Riola, 39, was charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, armed violence, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and theft over $10,000, the release stated.
Riola reportedly approached a woman at 11:50 a.m. Dec. 29 who was seated in her car in the Oak Brook Mall parking lot. He told the woman, “give me your car,” told her he had a knife and then brandished the weapon, according to the release.
Riola allegedly entered the car after the woman fled but was unable to start the car as he did not have the keys. He left the vehicle and approached a valet parking attendant and entered a running vehicle while the valet attendant and owner of the car stood nearby. He then drove away in the vehicle, according to the release.
An investigation by the Oak Brook Police Department led to Riola who was apprehended in Chicago later than day, the release stated.
“My office will do everything within our power to ensure that DuPage County residents will not have to worry about their personal safety while out shopping, dining or otherwise enjoying themselves this holiday season,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release. “I would like to thank the Oak Brook and Chicago Police departments for their efforts in identifying and apprehending the defendant in this case.”
Riola’s is scheduled to appear in DuPage County Court Jan. 28 for arraignment in front of Judge George Bakalis.
