Anti-Trump vandal goes back to Will County jail

A man convicted of spray-painting anti-Trump slogans and swastikas on Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar’s home was back in jail after violating the conditions of his probation.

About 10 a.m. Tuesday, Rae Tuszynski, 30, of the 200 block of Coral Court in Bolingbrook was taken to the Will County jail for failing to appear in court.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to revoke Tuszynski’s probation after he allegedly failed to complete 100 hours of community service, possessed a controlled substance in DuPage County and tested positive for marijuana.

On Dec. 21, 2017, Tuszynski pleaded guilty to threatening a public official, criminal damage to property and hate crime. Other charges of property damage and theft were dropped.

Tuszynski had spray-painted slogans on Claar’s home such as “Trump lover,” “Eat the rich,” “Corrupt Roger Claar resign,” “Bash Nazi scum,” “Nazi Trump [expletive]” and “an anarchist was here.”

Tuszynski also drew swastikas, which he said was commentary on the beliefs of Claar and Donald Trump. He said being convicted of committing a hate crime bothered him the most because he hates bigotry and a more appropriate charge would have been a “hate hate crime.”

Claar was re-elected Bolingbrook mayor in 2017 after facing off against Will County Board Member Jackie Traynere. The mayoral race received national attention as Claar supports U.S. President Donald Trump and invited him to the Bolingbrook Golf Club in September 2016.

As part of Tuszynski’s probation, he was ordered to pay about $5,870 in court costs, which included about $3,294 in restitution that would be paid to Claar and Bolingbrook.

Court records show Tuszynski has paid $55 of the amount owed thus far.
