ST. CHARLES – A man charged last year with killing his father in their St. Charles Township home was legally insane at the time of the murder, according to an expert clinical psychologist.

John Shenko, 23, who is autistic along with being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, has been charged with killing his father, Kevin J. Shenko, 60, at their home in St. Charles Township in August 2017. Prosecutors stated that Kevin Shenko's body had more than 100 wounds.

In October, Kane County assistant public defender Brenda Willett wrote that "the defendant may call Dr. [Michael] Oliverio as an expert in clinical psychology to offer his opinion that the defendant was legally insane at the time of the alleged offense," according to court records. "The report of Dr. Oliverio, which includes his interviews, diagnosis and opinion, has previously been provided to the State's Attorney's Office."

Oliverio works for the Kane County Diagnostic Center, which is the psychology department for the 16th Judicial Circuit. In September 2017, Kane County Judge John Barsanti ruled that John Shenko was not fit to stand trial and he was sent to a mental health facility in Elgin for inpatient treatment.

Shenko is being held on a $2 million bond. His next court date is set for Jan. 3.

According to court records, when sheriff's deputies arrived at his father's house, John Shenko was straddling his dead father's naked body, both of them covered in blood, while he kept repeating, "Die, die, die, die, die."

"No one else is here. My name is God. I killed Satan," Shenko also told Kane County Sheriff's Office deputies, according to court records. "You're going to have to trust me, you're going to have to believe in me."

When asked where the knife was, Shenko said: "What does it matter? I'm God."
