NIU basketball: Eugene German accepts plea deal for egg-throwing incident

DeKALB – Northern Illinois University basketball player Eugene German accepted a plea deal Thursday on a charge of battery.
German still was suspended by the Huskies the day after he agreed Thursday to a year of court supervision and 30 hours of community service. Two other players were reinstated from a separate shoplifting suspension also involving German.

The NIU athletic department declined to comment.

In a police report obtained by the Daily Chronicle, NIU police officers responded to a report of three students egged by three suspects at 12:30 a.m. May 5. The suspects were on red VeoRide bikes when the officers arrived, began heading east on Lucinda Avenue and then turned around and headed west. They then split up, and one suspect abandoned his bicycle, which was secured by NIU officers, along with a second bike later on.

According to the report, the eggs recovered near the scene expired Dec. 23, 2017. The victims told officers that they all were struck with eggs but did not suffer injuries.

On June 1, the department received the payment info from VeoRide of the renters of the bikes – Eugene German was one, the other two were redacted in the report.

German was interviewed June 11 by NIU police, where he admitted to throwing the eggs but did not give up the other two players – whose names were redacted. He apologized for making a stupid decision, signed a Miranda waiver, and left.

On Aug. 7, an arrest warrant for German was obtained before DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery. German was arrested at 11:48 p.m. that night at the Convocation Center while he was shooting hoops with two other people. NIU assistant coach Lamar Chapman provided bail for German, who was taken to the DeKalb police department and processed.
