One teen shot to death, second teen jailed

Major Crimes Task Force investigating death

A 17-year-old was shot to death and another 17-year-old was jailed on a gun charge.

Officers were dispatched to the 19900 block of Lily Court in Frankfort about 6 p.m. Sunday to investigate a report of a teen who had been shot in the chest, according to a statement from Frankfort police.

Frankfort firefighters transported the wounded teen to Silver Cross Hospital, where he died.

“Through the course of the investigation it was learned the juvenile victim was visiting a 17-year-old male juvenile friend at the Lily Court residence,” police said. “The juveniles had in their possession a .357 revolver and several rounds of ammunition. While the juveniles were handling the firearm, one live round discharged and struck the juvenile victim.”

An 18-year-old who was in the home called 911 and performed CPR. Officers later collected evidence from the scene, including the gun and ammunition, police said.

“At this time, the investigation remains very active with pathology and crime lab reports pending,” police said. “The Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force is assisting in the investigation.”

Prosecutors charged the surviving 17-year-old with unlawful possession of a weapon, said Charles B. Pelkie, the spokesman for the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The teen was arrested and taken to River Valley Juvenile Detention Center, police said. He later was released and currently is under house arrest, Pelkie said. He is scheduled to appear in court the morning of Dec. 12.

Officials did not identify either teen.
