Alice Chandler

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Alice Chandler, 98, passed away peacefully in her sleep Monday, Oct. 8, 2018, in Lawrence, Kansas.

She was born in 1920, in Pecatonica, to Ray and Urilla Herbig. She married Ernest Chandler in 1942, and they relocated to Sterling several years later.

As a longtime Sterling resident, Alice enjoyed oil painting, gardening, puzzles, and she also was an avid bird watcher. During World War II, she worked on airplane wings as a “Rosie the Riveter” in a Rockford factory.

She is survived by two daughters, Wendy Quirk and Karmel Astarae, both of Colorado. Surviving grandchildren include Trisha (Todd) Brabender, Patrik Mangan, Alison (Justin) Fitzgerald, Bodie (Heidi) Quirk, Hailey (Jeff) Phillipps, John (Stefanie) Chandler, Ryan (Tiffany) Chandler and Katie (Charles) Pearson. Surviving great-grandchildren are Quinn (Mallory) Brabender, Callie (Alex) Baird, Bain and Kohen Fitzgerald, Kody, Kamryn and Kai Chandler, Elaina and Clark Pearson, and Marley and Blaise Quirk.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Chandler, son, Brad Chandler, siblings, LaVerne Herbig, Larry Herbig, Floyd Herbig and Evelyn Dahl.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Nov. 16 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 2200 16th Ave., Sterling.
