SYCAMORE – For a third time, a man facing 36 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault has been deemed mentally unfit to go to trial.

Jeremy M. Westbrook, 43, who lived in the 1300 block of North Annie Glidden Road until he was arrested in March 2015, could face six to 30 years for each count if he’s convicted, meaning he’d get at least 216 years in prison.

Westbrook last was deemed unfit for trial Friday, after, for a third time, the Illinois Department of Health Services, rehabilitated him and recommended he be sent back to the DeKalb County Jail and put back on track for trial. No trial has ever been set, because according to court records, in January 2016, May 2017 and most recently Friday, he was deemed mentally unfit for trial, meaning he was sent back to the Randolph County Health Department in Chester.

“It’s very distressing for the victim’s family,” First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein said. “That stress and uncertainty is keeping them from healing.”

According to the charges, Westbrook sexually violated a victim who was younger than 13 on 36 occasions between April 2012 and March 2015.

Klein said the child is suspected to be Westbrook’s lone victim.

“They were known to each other,” she said.

Westbrook is represented by Public Defender Tom McCulloch. He’s due back in court at 9 a.m. Jan. 3.
