Suburban Life MVA Athlete of the Week: J.J. McCarthy, Nazareth, sophomore, football

WHY HE WAS SELECTED:

J.J. McCarthy continued the sensational start to his first varsity season on Sept. 21 at Benet, completing 18 of 27 passes for 425 yards and five touchdowns, and ran for a sixth TD in the 45-7 win. On the year he's thrown for 1,259 yards and 15 TDs.

McCarthy talked to Suburban Life sports editor Joshua Welge about his big game, and start to the season. Here is an edited version of the transcript:

Welge: Were you surprised at all at how one-sided the outcome was, and how did you guys do it?

McCarthy: We had a lot of intensity going into that game because Benet is one of our biggest rivals, them and Marist. We always want to put the gas on and don't let up. We had some good results.

Welge: Your coach compared your offense to driving a Corvette. How do you keep all your guys happy?

McCarthy: I'm just throwing the ball to the guys that were open. We don't have a lot of egos on this team. If we are scoring touchdowns, nobody is going to complain.

Welge: Did you always play quarterback?

McCarthy: In first grade, I played running back. Second grade I moved to quarterback.

Welge: When did you receive your first college scholarship offer?

McCarthy: Iowa State, in eighth grade. I was at a satellite camp at North Central College, Iowa State saw me and kept watching me, I had a good day. They invited me to their camp, I had a good day there and they offered me. It was breathtaking to get that offer. It left me shocked for a while.

Welge: How many offers do you have now?

McCarthy: Four – Iowa State, Indiana, Cincinnati and South Carolina.

Welge: Do you have any visits scheduled?

McCarthy: I was just at Indiana on Saturday. I'm going to Ohio State in two weeks. That is one of my dream schools. I can't wait to enjoy the experience.

Welge: How determined are you guys to win that state title?

McCarthy: Of course that's the final goal, but like coach said, all we are caring about is the next game.
