Documentary on Dixon comptroller's $53.7M theft coming soon to Netflix

A documentary chronicling former Dixon Comptroller Rita Crundwell’s $53.7 million theft will be available to stream on Netflix on July 10.

“All the Queen’s Horses” has been traveling to film festivals and towns across the nation for screenings since August, and it launched in April on more than 20 providers and platforms, including Comcast, DirecTV, Dish Network, Mediacom, iTunes, Google Play, YouTube and Amazon Prime.

The 71-minute film was the No. 1 most-viewed documentary on iTunes, Amazon Video and Google Play when it was released, and it won the HBO Spotlight Award for Best Documentary in August and the Golden Laurels Award at the 2018 Beloit International Film Festival.

The documentary is about Crundwell’s theft across two decades that funded her quarter horse breeding empire and lavish lifestyle before her 2010 arrest.

Directed by Kelly Richmond Pope, an accounting professor at DePaul University who specializes in white collar crime, the documentary features interviews with forensic accountants, government officials, attorneys and local residents in the cautionary tale that reminds viewers that fraud can happen anywhere.

“If you pay taxes, you should want to see this film,” Pope said.

The film came to Dixon three times in the past several months: in September for a private showing at Crundwell’s former estate, in October for two free screenings at the Historic Dixon Theatre, and in March for four free screenings at the theater.
