A Chicago man tried to buy a car at Hawk Chevrolet of Joliet using fake identification, police said.
About 9 p.m. Tuesday, Johnny Au, 30, of the 7600 block of North Paulina Street was arrested on charges of identity theft, obstructing identification, obstructing justice, forgery, deceptive practice and possession of fraudulent identification in connection with the incident.
Au had visited Hawk Chevrolet in an attempt to buy a car, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said in an email. The dealership management noticed that Au, who presented identification and used another name during the application process, spelled the name differently than what had returned during a credit check, Gregory said.
About 8 p.m. Tuesday, Au returned to the dealership and police were notified. He presented a fictitious identification to the officers while claiming the name on it was his name, Gregory said.
An officer ran a check on the name, which came back with a picture that appeared different than Au, Gregory said. Au had three other identifications in his possession with his picture on them but the names were different, he said.
Gregory said Au’s victims were notified and one victim stated his credit alert notified him that someone was applying for a loan at Hawk Auto in his name. That victim appeared at the scene, he said.
Au was booked into the Will County jail on a $2,000 bond. He’ll need $200 to post bail. He also was wanted on a warrant from Hoffman Estates, according to county jail records.
