Taekwondo event raises over $6K for cancer programs

SYCAMORE – A fundraiser organized by Bill Cho’s United Taekwondo Center in Sycamore might become a regular event after more than $6,000 was collected for the Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital Cancer Center.

More than 50 taekwondo students broke boards for the “Kicking it for Cancer” break-athon at Sycamore High School. The boards included the names of family members, friends and community members who are fighting cancer, or in memory of someone who has died.

“By breaking boards in honor of community members, we want to help those going through cancer feel supported and strong,” said Jayna Bartelt, manager at Bill Cho’s United Taekwondo Center. “Our No. 1 goal above all else is teaching character building.”

Because the event raised $6,338 for cancer support groups, educational programs and community outreach, Bartelt said the break-athon might be an annual event.
