Glen Ellyn man sentenced to 23 years for 7-Eleven armed robbery

GLEN ELLYN – A Glen Ellyn man has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for robbing a 7-Eleven convenience store in Carol Stream at gunpoint in January 2015.

Johnny Holmes, 26, was found guilty of armed robbery and armed violence, both felonies, after a three-day jury trial in January 2018, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. The sentence was handed down by DuPage County Judge George Bakalis on April 26.

On Jan. 26. 2015, Holmes and a co-defendant went to a 7-Eleven in Carol Stream. Holmes armed himself with a handgun, entered the store and demanded cash from the store clerk, the release stated.

The store clerk handed Holmes $180, and Holmes left the store with the money and fled the scene, according to the release. A short time later, Glen Ellyn police officers observed a man, later identified as Holmes, walking along a street.

When the officers attempted to stop and speak with the individual, he fled and was apprehended a short time later, the release stated. Through the course of their investigation, officers were able to supply the State’s Attorney’s Office with enough information to warrant charges against Holmes, according to the release.

Holmes has remained in custody in the DuPage County Jail on a $500,000 bond, with 10 percent to apply, the release stated.

Bakalis sentenced Holmes to 23 years in prison for armed robbery and a concurrent 15 years for armed violence. Sentencing guidelines require that Holmes serve 50 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole, according to the release.
