ALGONQUIN – The Verizon Wireless at 1554 E. Algonquin Road closed a little bit early Thursday night.
Police were dispatched about 7:30 p.m. to the store, which typically closes at 8 p.m., for a reported armed robbery. Officers remained on the scene at least 90 minutes after the incident occurred.
Hardly any information was available as of 9 p.m. while police were in the initial stages of the investigation, Sgt. James Sowizrol said. He didn’t have suspect descriptions but confirmed the robbery happened. He said more information should be available Friday.
Before that, a dispatcher on the police and fire scanner said two suspects fled to the east on foot.
A couple of officers could be seen about 8:45 p.m. inside Verizon investigating while two civilians remained in the store with them.
In a nearby neighborhood to the east, an officer could be seen about 8:35 p.m. patrolling sidewalks with a flashlight.
Despite what happened nearby, other businesses in the plaza – which is across the street from Jewel-Osco – stayed open.
There were a handful of police vehicles near the store. A few doors down from Verizon, kids practiced karate. A Carpentersville police officer with a barking K-9 in the back of his SUV grabbed coffee from the Starbucks drive-thru on the other side of the building.
