Scenes from Sandwich’s past: How Dummer School came to be

After a two-year legal battle ending in the Illinois Supreme Court, this brick building on South Wells Street was constructed in 1921 and 1922 on 15 acres as the high school. There was an addition in 1954 and a renovation in 2002. In 1966, it became the Herman Dummer Junior High School and now houses the fourth and fifth grades. Dummer was a longtime school administrator, alderman, and police magistrate.
