JOLIET — A 38-year-old Shorewood man has died more than one week after his motorcycle collided with a vehicle in Joliet.
Roger A. Phillips, 38, of Shorewood, was pronounced dead around 3 p.m. Monday at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, according to a news release from the Will County Coroner's Office. Phillips was driving a motorcycle that crashed with another vehicle at the intersection of West Jefferson Street and O'Neill Street in Joliet on Sunday, July 30.
Victoria L. Martin, 27, of the 400 block of Western Avenue, Joliet, was arrested by Joliet police July 31 and charged in connection with the crash with aggravated driving while license suspended.
Martin was allegedly driving a Hyundai Sonata at the time her driver’s license was suspended and was involved in a crash that resulted in personal injury to Phillips, according to a criminal complaint filed in Will County court.
Martin was also ticketed for failure to yield, operating a vehicle with a suspended registration and driving an uninsured motor vehicle in the incident.
Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said Martin was pulling out of the Citgo gas station at 1160 W. Jefferson St. when Philips, who was heading east on Jefferson Street on a 2003 Honda motorcycle, hit her car.
Philips was also driving while his license was suspended and did not have a motorcycle license, Roechner said. He said a blood-alcohol test for Martin is pending.
The final cause and manner of Phillips' death will be determined following a review of records and toxicological results, the release stated. The Joliet Police Department continues to investigate the incident, and funeral home selection is pending.
On May 29, 2014, Martin was ticketed by Joliet police for driving while her license was suspended and operating an uninsured car.
On April 27, 2015, she pleaded guilty to both charges. She was sentenced to 8 days in jail and fined $300 for driving on a suspended license and $800 for operating an uninsured car.
