Mystery Diner: Shu's Sushi a fresh alternative in Oswego

Image 1 of 4

Sure, the Mystery Diner loves a great burger or a steak or a slice of pizza, but sometimes we crave something different.

Just as the Kendall County area has diversified over the past 15 or so years, so have the food choices available to residents. One of the more popular options in this area, and here in the United States, over the past several years has been sushi.

One of the more recent additions to the sushi scene is Shu's Sushi, located in a strip mall at the southwest corner of Route 71 and Washington Street at 4566 State Route 71 in Oswego. Shu's Sushi opened up about three years or so ago, and the Mystery Diner has been meaning to try it.

Like most sushi restaurants, the menu is expansive, but it's not overwhelming. My server, Zack, was there to answer any questions and made sure my experience was a positive one.

Patrons can choose between the entrees on the menu, which include a chef's choice of sashimi (raw seafood), nigiri (seafood on a ball of rice), or a variety of maki rolls. The Mystery Diner is a huge fan of maki rolls, and loves the creative way sushi chefs plate the rolls, so he decided to try a couple for his meal.

The maki rolls are creatively named, and the Mystery Diner decides to order the Oswego Maniac roll, which includes lightly seared spicy tuna and spicy salmon, crab meat, and a cream sauce, and the Red Alert roll with spicy crab, shrimp tempura and tobiko, which is flying fish roe.

The plate is garnished with the traditional wasabi and thinly sliced pickled ginger, along with an artistically sliced apple as a palate cleanser.

All told, the meal was delicious and fresh. I could tell that great care was given to preparing the rolls and making my meal spectacular, despite it being an odd hour on a weekday. The flavors were intense but balanced, and the food tasted as colorful as it looked.

The Mystery Diner highly recommends Shu's Sushi for lunch (the restaurant touts lunch specials) or dinner. It really is a unique treat.
