Woodstock to host wrestling clinic May 13; Navy coach Joel Sharratt, USA Wrestling's Mike Clayton featured

Woodstock will offer a one-day wrestling clinic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 13 for a cost of $25.

Blue Streaks wrestling coach Jon Grell and 1991 Woodstock graduate Kurt Kyle have teamed up for the Doug Zembiec Memorial Wrestling Club Clinic, which will feature U.S. Naval Academy coach Joel Sharratt and Mike Clayton, the manager of the National Coaches Education Program for USA Wrestling.

The camp is open to wrestlers from sixth through 12th grades, with registration starting at 8 a.m. that day. The event will take place in Woodstock’s James M. Shipley Memorial Gymnasium.

Kyle is a Navy commander and former Navy wrestler. Grell is a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve who is on leave from Woodstock High School on active duty orders until October.

They want to honor Zembiec, a former All-America wrestler at Navy, who was killed in Baghdad in 2007. As a major in the U.S. Marine Corps, Zembiec earned a Bronze Star for valor in 2004. He finished his collegiate wrestling career with a 95-21-1 record.

A T-shirt and lunch will be provided to each registered wrestler for the event.
