Boys swimming: Netzel, Yanello top area's state contingent

With Plainfield North junior Ryan Netzel and Joliet Central Co-op senior Jonathan Yanello leading the way, the Joliet area sports 22 qualifiers for this weekend’s Boys State Swimming & Diving Meet at New Trier in Winnetka.

Among the 22 qualifiers, six posted sectional times that ranked in the top 10 in the state.

Netzel was fifth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:40.86, while Lockport senior Joshua Lantow was seventh at 1:41.51. The top time belonged to Peoria Notre Dame junior Colton Paulson at 1:39.85.

Netzel also was fifth in the 500 free (4:36.87), an event where Paulson also had the top time (4:32.36).

Yanello was fourth in the 50 free (21.05). Whitney Young senior Mateo Chavez led at 20.80.

Lincoln-Way West senior Kyle Karpluk was eighth in the 100 butterfly (50.66) and 13th in the 50 free (21.42). Lincoln-Way East senior Andy Grever was ninth in the 500 (4:38.14), while Lantow was 15th (4:39.46).

Other area qualifiers whose sectional times finished farther down the list were Lincoln-Way West sophomore Danny O’Brien in the 200 free (1:46.57); Grever (1:57.25) and Lockport sophomore Jack O’Connor (1:57.30) in the 200 IM; Yanello in the 100 fly (51.92); Plainfield North co-op sophomore Merek Avery (53.19), Joliet Central co-op freshman David Paskvan (53.75) and Lincoln-Way Central junior Tim Murphy (54.01) in 100 backstroke; Lincoln-Way East senior Jared Blair in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.08); and Lincoln-Way East senior Jonathan Limp in the 100 free.

The area qualifiers in relays were the Joliet Central co-op in the 200 free (1:27.12) and Lincoln-Way East in the 200 medley (1:38.00), 200 free (1:29.46) and 400 free (3:14.68).

The only area diver to qualify for state was Lockport sophomore Wrigley Fields, who won the Lockport Sectional title with 423.10 points.
