Geneva's Bicycle Heaven moves into rear warehouse while H4 Training leases front end

GENEVA – Six years after moving to its current location at 124 W. State St., Geneva, Bicycle Heaven is again undergoing a change and a move.

The bicycle shop is moving its entire operation to 1,800 square feet at the rear of the building, and renting out the 3,000 square-foot front space facing State Street, owner Ara Oggoian said.

Bicycle Heaven’s front door will open onto the parking lot, while H4 Training, which does personal fitness training in small group settings, will be in the front of the building.

“Most people don’t realize there is a warehouse in the back of this building,” Oggoian said. “I always wanted to lease that out. And there is a full-size basement. The basement is 4,500 square feet.”

But once you start subdividing space, each one needs separate entrances and fire exits, Oggoian said, hence the ongoing construction to retrofit the new Bicycle Heaven showroom space.

“The building was originally built in 1954 as an Ace Hardware,” Oggoian said. “The electric was upgraded in the 1970s – maybe. … We’ve got a few weeks yet, as the electric’s not installed. And then we’ve got to take all the old electric out. I had to pay for a new transformer.”

Bicycle Heaven moved there from the corner of Route 25 and State Street in 2011.

Oggoian said the business will focus more on the parking lot during spring and summer with bikes outside and on weekends.

While Bicycle Heaven is expected to reopen in March, the front tenant, H4 Training, which offers small group personal training, just opened Feb. 1.

Assistant manager for H4 Training, Kelsey Hayen, said the company has another location in Wheaton which has been open for three years.

“It’s a perfect location,” Hayen said of their new digs in Geneva. “We have floor-to-ceiling windows in our other location as well. It makes it really bright. It opens up the room a lot. And it was the perfect size – it’s the same size as our last location. Couldn’t get any better than that. And it’s in Geneva – Geneva is fantastic.”

The fitness center’s first customers were Matt and Jennifer Shelley of Geneva.

As to why they were there:

“I have to lose 35 to 40 pounds,” Jennifer Shelley said.

“She talked me into signing up,” her husband said, laughing.

The Shelleys were working with trainer Eric Kirkman, with all three of them sitting on foam rollers for their first set of exercises.

“If you’re sitting at a desk all day, you might tend to be tight and lose mobility,” Kirkman said. “We’re about to go through a few exercises.”
