SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Senior Charnelle Reed led three Saints in double figures with 17 points as the top-ranked University of St. Francis women’s basketball team defeated Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Indiana-South Bend, 65-45, Wednesday night.
USF (19-0, 12-0) remained one of two undefeated teams in NAIA Division II. Indiana-South Bend (7-14, 3-9) suffered its fourth straight setback. The Saints broke away from a 15-15 tie after one quarter to lead 34-24 at half and 53-37 after three quarters.
Kamari Jordan (Bolingbrook) and Jordan Giddings scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, for USF. Jordan also handed out five assists. The Saints out-shot the hosts 43 percent to 30 percent and held a 47-36 rebounding edge.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Lewis 69, Bellarmine 57: No. 24 Lewis (14-4, 6-2) held the defending Great Lakes Valley Conference champions, No. 4 Bellarmine, to a 24.2 percent shooting performance Thursday. Jessica Kelliher was 7-for-7 shooting to finish with a team-best 15 points and added five rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Jamie Johnson finished with 11 points. The Flyer bench accounted for 25 points, led by nine points and a team-high eight rebounds from Erica Correa.
JJC 92, Wright 27: NJCAA Region IV Player of the Week Deesha Brefford had 28 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and one steal for the Wolves (13-7, 3-2) in the N4C victory over Wright (0-16, 0-5). Kianna Campbell contributed 20 points, six rebounds and two steals; Destiny Villalejo nine points, four rebounds and seven assists; and Kierra Tyler nine points, two rebounds and four assists.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
USF 88, Indiana-South Bend 75: Jo Jo Ballestero poured in 25 points and Logan Timmons and Landus Anderson posted double-doubles as St. Francis (14-7, 8-4) remained atop the CCAC South Division standings with the win over Indiana-South Bend (11-10, 5-7). Ballestero hit 5 of 7 3-point attempts. His 25 points tied a career high. Timmons finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Anderson had 10 points and 10 boards. Jorden Thornton added 14 points.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Joliet West 44, Thornton 37: The Tigers (12-7) were led by Sarah Gersh and Shenea Best.
Gardner-South Wilmington 61, St. Anne 39: Jenni Price had 23 points and eight steals for Gardner (16-6, 6-2) in the River Valley Conference victory. Kaylee Steichen and Sydney Perkins (four steals) both had 10 points.
Seneca 45, Manteno 33: Cora Wilkinson led the way with 16 points and seven boards for Seneca (12-10, 5-4) in the Interstate Eight tournament win.
Reed-Custer 71, Westmont 35: Kailee Schact (12 points) and Sydney Pardy (11 points) led Reed-Custer (12-11) to victory in the first round of the Interstate Eight tourney.
GIRLS BOWLING
Lockport 1,929, Bolingbrook 1,441: Raquel Mirabella rolled a 379 and Hope James a 336 two-game score for the Porters at Strike & Spare II. Grace Karraker rolled a one-game 224, while Paige Reiter (219), Bailey Delrose (215), Dana Ackerson (185), Marissa Ramirez (203), Monica Colon (166) also rolled one game. The Raiders were led by Amber Johnson (359) and Maddy Kurk (317).
BOYS SWIMMING
Lincoln-Way Central 107, Homewood-Flossmoor 69: Tim Murphy won three of his events, including the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. He was first in the 400 free relay with Danny O’Brien, Mason Maze and Zach Athos. Central (4-3, 3-0) won nine of the 12 events. Jake Culver, Dylan Sterling also won their individual events.
