HENNEPIN — Melvin R. “Chub” Steen, 85, of Hennepin died at 8:46 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016, at Unity Point Health Methodist Hospital in Peoria.
Born Dec. 12, 1930, in Bureau County to Richard and Iona Simon Steen, he married Sharon Sterling. She survives.
He was a graduate of Hall High School. He worked for many years as a self-employed truck driver. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War.
He was a member of the Seatonville Congregational Church (Independent), the American Legion and LaSalle V.F.W. Post 4668.
Also surviving are one daughter, Michelle, of Plymouth Falls, Ore.; three stepsons, Steven Bass of Chicago, Donald Bass of Sandusky, Ohio, and Neal Bass of Spring, Texas; three grandchildren; three stepgrandsons; six stepgranddaughters; three stepgreat-granddaughters; six stepgreat-grandsons; one sister, Beverly Morris of Princeton; one aunt, Odessa Fontana of Princeton; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wilbur; a sister, Lois; and a brother-in-law, Jack.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Seatonville Congregational Church (Independent) with Pastor Bill Jacobsen officiating. Burial will follow at Greenfield Cemetery in LaMoille with full military honors.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the Barto Funeral Home in Spring Valley and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Memorials may be directed to the family for distribution to charities of their choice.
